I am just a Dub, and not close to the ground, but I looked at the figures before the last election in the North, and I couldn’t see how Sinn Fein could win in either Derry or South Down. Basically, Sinn Fein’s advance has been pretty linear, and extrapolating it on did not give a Sinn Fein win in either constituency.
The SDLP’s problem is that the steady Sinn Fein advance in percentage terms is continuing, and unless there is a change in this longstanding trend, the SDLP will lose control of the seats, probably at the election after next. The South Belfast seat is really only “borrowed” from Unionists, as would any EURO 2009 seat be.
